Website Accessibility

Wikipedia defines web accessibility as the "refers to the practice of making websites usable by people of all abilities and disabilities."

For the past decade, the push for accessibility on the web has grown, due in part to the tremendous growth of assistive technologies and the ability for people with disabilities to use those technologies to use computers and the internet.

At its core, website accessibility essentially means that when the site is developed, each page should be coded in accordance with the published specification of the World Wide Web Consortium. By following these guidelines, web pages can be read effectively by screen readers and other tools, which makes the page accessible to anyone.

However, a strong business case for developing accessible websites can be made. Not only does the approach keep a site in accordance with the law, but it also creates a site that is more efficient to manage, easier to maintain and is more flexible. A site that is developed with accessibility in mind can be adapted for display on standard monitors, mobile displays and also text-only devices.
